Juvenile Sex Offenders can be Rehabilitated

Teenage sex offenders are often viewed as socially awkward lost causes who can never return from the path that they have chosen. But, a recent study has shown that this is far from the truth. This study proves that most teenage sex offenders have adequate social skills to function in society; it’s their atypical sexual desires that need to be mitigated. And when a sex offender therapist gets through to them; their chances of reoffending are reduced and they can be rehabilitated.

Focus on Social Skills

Many sexual offender therapies and treatment programs are centered on improving the teenagers’ social skills. The treatments focus on helping these kids learn how to act in social situations and gatherings. This can be helpful, but this isn’t the only course of treatment and it is certainly not the root of their sexual issues.

Early Exposure to Explicit Images

To treat these teenage offenders effectively, the therapists need to look at when their sexual issues began. More often than not, the cause is early exposure to pornography and other sexually explicit images. This can lead to pornography addiction, which escalates over time and they want to act out their sexual fantasies. The compulsion to achieve sexual gratification by acting out their twisted fantasies is what compels them to sexually offend.

Childhood Abuse

Childhood abuse, either sexual or physical, can also be the reason why teenagers develop atypical sexual interests. Their abuse makes them susceptible to mental illnesses, like stress, depression, PTSD etc, and they start acting out sexually to cope with their own issues. If the right treatment program is provided to these victims, then the chances of them reoffending can be lowered and they can get better.
